Meeting of the NSSG in Japan

The meeting of the NSSG Group ( Nuclear Safety and Security Group) was held from 2 to 4 February 2016, in Iwaki City, in the territory of Fukushima (Japan). The NSSG group provides technical consulting for the strategic G7 policy on issues relevant for security in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Delegations of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States and European Union attended the meeting. The representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were also present at the conference. The Italian delegation was composed of representatives of ISPRA and ENEA.

During the meeting the discussion addressed the projects related to safety of Chernobyl plant; the enhancement of the legal framework relating to the Nuclear Safety Convention and the international regulations of liability in the nuclear field; the independence of the Ukrainian regulator. It also addressedthe strengthening of the international nuclear safety after the IAEA Action Plan and the report on the incident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Aspects related to assistance in the field of nuclear safety in developing countries were also examined, as well as issues related to uranium mining and the environmental consequences in Central Asia.
During the works of the conference it was organized a visit at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
