LIFE Egyptian Vulture: arrived in Africa the first Egyptian vultures released in Matera in August 2019

The first two egyptian ventures of the eight released in August in the Park of the Murgia of Matera have now reached their wintering districts in Africa. Jane and Leonardo are now in the south of the Sahara, respectively in Niger and Mali, and here they will remain for a few years, until, as adulthood approaches, they will return to the shores of the Mediterranean in search of suitable territories for nesting.

Their movements were constantly followed thanks to the GPS which they were equipped before being released; the information collect during the migration will allow to better understand the difficulties and dangers faced by the Egyptian vulture during their travels between Europe and Africa and will allow them to better orientate the conservation interventions envisaged under the LIFE project, which Ispra is partner too. Three other Egyptian vultures in Matera started the migration, reaching Sicily and the Calabrian side of the Strait of Messina. Soon we will know if they too will decide to leave for Africa.
