IWRM-NET is a project of the ERA-Net coordinated by the Office International de l'Eau and funded by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme for research.

The research and development at Community level has as its foundation the Lisbon Strategy and the European Commission communication "Towards a European Research Area (ERA), which aims to overcome the fragmented nature, not coordinated and therefore less effective for research at Community level.

IWRM-Net's longest acronym title "Towards a European exchange network for integrating research Efforts on Integrated Water Resources Management" has a duration of five years and involves 21 European institutions, including the Ispra, which is among the funders of the second notice that has selected seven common transnational projects on issues of climate change, water scarcity, drought and the economic and social aspects of the water.

The integrated management of water resources is one of the environmental policies  of the European Community with the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC),which the application is engaging many community and national working groups with different responsibilities and projects competencies.

The projects funded by the Common II Call of IWRM-NET (the three partners financed by Italian Ispra are ICARUS, Water2Adapt, Water Cap & Trade) have started their activities September 1, 2010 and will be concluded by September 2012. The output of IWRM-NET is available on the project site: http://iwrm-net.eu
