Italian Geoparks

Italy is well represented in the international panorama with 9 Geoparks recognized by the European Network and Global Network under the auspices of UNESCO.

A prestigious recognition that the nine Geoparks achieved by building on their territories innovative management strategies, in which the geoconservation, together with the educational and spreading activities, are able to start a strategic path for sustainable development, towards a new model of land use.

September 5, 2013: The Geopark SESIA - VAL GRANDE (Piedmont) becomes the ninth Italian Geopark!
Italy consolidates its first place in Europea in the protection of geological heritage, in terms of number of Geoparks, which goes up to nine, thus making Italy the country with the largest number of Geoparks in Europe, second in the world only to China.
The formalization of the entrance of Geopark Sesia-ValGrande in the EGN occurred during the ceremony which was held in Ascea, in the archaeological park of Velia, at the conclusion of the 12th European Geoparks Conference, organized by the Italian Geopark of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni. Four territories entered into the network on this occasion: Sesia-Val Grande, Geopark Idrija (Slovenia), the Geopark Hondsrug (first geopark in the Netherlands) and the Geopark Kula (first geopark in Turkey).
ISPRA supports the Italian Geoparks and supports all the countries interested to join the network by providing help in the preparation of the application file to be submitted all'EGN.
ISPRA is also a permanent member of the National Forum of Italian Geoparks.
