The meaning of a Geopark

An internationally recognized Geopark is a territory that has a particular geological heritage and a sustainable development strategy. In addition should have well-defined boundaries and sufficient extension to allow an effective economic development of the district.


A Geopark must include a number of geological sites of special importance in terms of scientific quality, historic, cultural and educational value. The sites of a Geopark have to be liked in a network and to benefit of measures for the protection and management. An area identified as a Geopark must be administered by well-defined structures and able to reinforce their protection. A Geopark has an active role in the economic development of its territory and must make a positive impact on the living conditions of its  citizens and the environment.
