The Department of Nature Protection of ISPRA participates to the PROFORBIOMED  project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Commission, within the program MED "Improving of the energy efficiency and promotion of renewable energy sources".

The  PROFORBIOMED aims to promote the use of biomass as a renewable source of energy, through the development of an integrated strategy for sustainable use of forest biomass in the Mediterranean area . Within the consortium, involving 18 institutions, the Department of Nature Protection of ISPRA has the duty to develop actions relating to the monitoring of the impact that the use of forest biomass (including both harvesting intensity and collection of forest residues) and plantation wood energy (for example, the use of invasive taxa) can have on the natural  biocenosis.

The project was presented for the first time in Italy during the International Conference RomaForest2011 and in October 2011, the Department of Nature Protection has initiated the project monitoring, in collaboration with other institutions and organizations

Project plan

Through this project, the promotion of the sustainable use of forest bioenergy in the Mediterranean area must be developed through innovation, not only technological but also legal factors.
The project has a multi-sectoral approaches  and involves collaboration between public and private actors at different levels, from the European level to the local level. It also provides for the implementation of various activities divided into five policy areas: industry, energy, forestry, agriculture and environment.
The project will develop several pilot-experiences of 13 subject areas, aimed at strengthening cooperation between the parties involved and to provide tools for demonstration and transfer of know-how.
