Environmental aspects of relict sand dredging for beach nourishment: proposal for a monitoring protocol

The Cahier n. 5 “Environmental aspects of relict sand dredging for beach nourishment: proposal for a monitoring protocol” stems from the Institute’s decade-long experience obtained by planning and carrying out environmental monitoring studies before and after relict sand dredging activities for beach nourishment. Because of the innovative nature of these studies, especially in the Mediterranean, most of them are considered pilot-studies. The large quantity of data gathered allowed us to acquire specific experience on little-known themes, and these experiences brought the Institute to take part in the European projects “Beachmed” and “Beachmed-e”, within which the protocol was shared by the various partners. The Cahier was produced with the contribution of the Lazio Region, within the European project “Beachmed” (Interreg IIIB) and of the Italian Ministry for Environment, Territory and Sea. The English version was drafted within the EU project “Beachmed-e” (Interreg IIIC), subproject EuDREP. This document is part of a wider project related to the creation of the “Linee guida sulla movimentazione dei fondali marini e degli ambienti ad essi contigui”, already drafted by ISPRA (formerly ICRAM), who published the volume on harbor dredgings.
