National monitoring of pesticides in the waters. Indications for selection of substances

As part of national monitoring of pesticides in water, ISPRA plays a role of coordination and guidance versus Italian Regions and Environmental Agencies. This document extends and updates the information already provided in previous guidance documents prepared by the Institute for the selection of priority substances for the monitoring. This information concerns the relevant substances identified by the Community and national legislation, the sales data, the hazards of the substances, the water monitoring data and the results from the application of exposure prediction indices. The document also deals with the issue of degradation products, which still receive little consideration in monitoring programs, and addresses preliminarily the issue of the priority for sediments. Lastly, the problem of mixtures is presented, for possible cumulative effects, which should be taken into account in monitoring planning.
