Presentation of the Municipal Waste Report - edition 2025

The twenty-seventh edition of the Municipal Waste Report will be presented on December 11th in the Multipurpose Hall of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Rome. This report provides data updated to 2024 on the production, separate waste collection, management, and import/export flows of urban waste and packaging at the national, regional, and provincial levels.

The document, developed by ISPRA's National Center for Waste and Circular Economy with the contribution of local environmental agencies, offers a comprehensive and objective framework to support legislators in guiding policies and interventions, monitoring their effectiveness, and introducing any corrective measures.

The report also includes monitoring the costs of urban waste services, the application of the tariff system, and a review of the implementation status of territorial planning updated to 2024.

Safety in Industrial Plants: the Seveso Directive and Emerging Risks from the Energy Transition

ISPRA, together with the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, has organized an advanced training course for personnel responsible for inspections at SEVESO establishments. The launch event will take place in Rome on December 4. The course, which is part of a broader program managed by the newly established ISPRA Academy, aims to provide an opportunity for shared engagement to enhance safety levels and to disseminate the latest developments in safety and security that characterize the current national landscape, such as the assessment of industrial risks associated with climate change and the increasingly complex cyber threat. The goal is to build a broad dialogue which, in a perspective of public–private cooperation, involves stakeholders who, in various capacities, contribute to the management and inspection activities of the establishments, promoting the exchange of experiences with the ultimate objective of improving plant safety, protecting workers, and safeguarding the environment.

Final conference LIFE SeaForest project

ISPRA is hosting the final meeting of the European LIFE SeaForest project, dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the priority marine habitat H1120*: Posidonia oceanica meadows.
The event will be an important opportunity for international discussion and dissemination of the results achieved.
The conference can also be followed online, with simultaneous Italian-English translation available.

The project, coordinated by D.R.E.Am. Italia together with ISPRA, CNR, University of Tuscia, Carbonsink, Paragon Europe, and three National Parks (Asinara, La Maddalena Archipelago and Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni), has implemented and tested concrete actions to reduce the degradation of Posidonia oceanica meadows.

Environmental assessments cannot do without the contribution of ecotoxicological tests, which estimate toxic effects on living organisms in various application contexts.
The contribution of public and private laboratories must continue to be crucial to the growth of a sector that supports the country's economic system in implementing the principles of the Green and Blue Economy.

Final event Life CONCEPTU MARIS

The final event of Life CONCEPTU MARIS (In Defense of the Giants of the Mediterranean - Life Conceptu Maris), consisting of two days—one technical and one informative—will present the main results achieved in four years of activity.

The first day, scheduled for November 25th, will be open to the technical and scientific community, members of the maritime sector Advisory Board, and the network of related projects formed during CONCEPTU MARIS. The event will share and discuss the results of monitoring activities conducted along 17 routes in the Western Mediterranean and the Adriatic Region, with the collaboration of seven shipping companies and eleven partners from Spain, France, and Italy. Together, they will build a bridge to the project's future.

National Tree Day

The European Regulation on nature restoration, particularly in Article 8, addresses the issue of improving urban ecosystems, requiring Member States to ensure that, by 2030, no national area of urban green space is lost and emphasizing the need to preserve and increase urban tree cover. Important challenges are therefore posed for green infrastructure in urban ecosystems—challenges for which Italy is not entirely unprepared, as the last decade has seen the consolidation of a regulatory and strategic framework that has increased awareness among technicians and administrators of the environmental and social role of trees and green spaces in cities, as well as the importance of their proper planning and management. Nevertheless, it is clear that efforts must be accelerated, with greater focus on expanding green and blue areas to create cities that are more inclusive, livable, and resilient to the impacts of climate change.

ISPRA: The Sea for the Common Welfare

"ISPRA: The Sea for Common Well-Being" is a day organized by ISPRA at the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome, entirely dedicated to data, information, and perspectives on the future of our seas. The day will feature the participation of researchers, institutional representatives, journalists, associations, and students.

The day will focus on the following main themes: understanding the health of Italy's seas; protecting biodiversity and restoring marine ecosystems; the blue economy for sustainability and innovation; the interconnection between marine health, human health, and animal health (the One Health principle); and promoting scientific communication and environmental education for the sea.

The National Geodatabase of Artificial Cavities

Artificial cavity databases as a knowledge and documentation tool aimed at risk mitigation

ISPRA, in collaboration with the Italian Speleological Society, has created the National Geodatabase of Artificial Cavities (GNCA), accessible on the National Environmental Information System (SINA) portal.

The GNCA is a database containing the locations, data and documentation, plans, cross-sections, and inspection reports relating to artificial cavities surveyed throughout Italy. The data comes from the Italian Speleological Society database and various datasets developed by ISPRA as part of specific studies and projects.

The Role of Geosciences: From Basic Knowledge to Satellite Data to AI for the Country's Sustainable Future

ISPRA, in collaboration with the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), will participate in the "OrientaTalenti 2025" event, scheduled for November 6 and 7, 2025, at MIND – Milano Innovation District, the innovation hub located in the former Expo Milano area.

Promoted by OrientaTalenti, the event is dedicated to students and aims to foster connections between the worlds of education, scientific research, and institutions, offering young people the opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of the professions of the future and the skills required by the ecological and digital transition.

During the event, ISPRA will offer a thematic session entitled "The Role of Geosciences: From Basic Knowledge to Satellite Data to AI for the Country's Sustainable Future," which will be held on Friday, November 7, from 1:45 PM to 3:00 PM, at MIND (Valore Italia headquarters, Sala Platino 1P).

EMAS Italy Award 2025

Ecomondo 2025: Focus on Ecodesign and Environmental Certifications

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, together with the Ecolabel and Ecoaudit Committee and the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, is organizing the conference "The New European Ecodesign Regulation and its Impact on EMAS, Ecolabel, and Made Green in Italy Voluntary Certifications" at Ecomondo.

The meeting will focus on new European legislation on sustainability, with particular attention to Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 on product ecodesign, Directive (EU) 2024/825 on consumer empowerment, and Directive (EU) 2022/2464 on sustainability reporting.

The conference will also explore the role of EMAS, EU Ecolabel, and Made Green in Italy environmental certifications as key tools for strengthening businesses' competitiveness and supporting them in the green transition.

During the event, the EMAS 2025 Awards will be presented, which recognize the most virtuous EMAS-registered organizations.

Emergency - First report on system activations: 2024 data

Presentation event for the first national system report on the activation of Environmental Agencies in emergency situations, based on data for 2024.

The strategic role of the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) in territorial defense and the management of environmental aspects in emergency situations: from a circular economy perspective, reducing territorial vulnerability is a key factor in containing costs and improving regional resilience.

Sustainable Finance, the web platform created by ISPRA with the contribution of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy

ISPRA, with the contribution of MIMIT as part of the "Let's Make It Circular" campaign, is developing a web platform for sustainable finance aimed at businesses, citizens, and financial operators. The goal is to transform the ISPRA Guideline "The Environmental Challenge for Sustainable Finance: Methodologies, Information, and Environmental Indicators" into a more accessible and usable digital tool. The platform will serve as a methodological support and guidance tool to facilitate environmental sustainability reporting in accordance with the new European standards.

Presentation of the Europe's Environment 2025 Report, the State of the Environment Report, and the SNPA Environment Report

On October 28, 2025, in the Sala della Regina of Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome, a national event will be held to jointly present three major reports on the state of the environment: Europe's Environment 2025 (European Environment Agency), State of the Environment in Italy 2025: Indicators and Analysis (ISPRA), and the SNPA Environment Report 2025 (National System for Environmental Protection).

The event will offer an integrated and up-to-date overview of key environmental dynamics, from the European, national, regional, and autonomous provinces perspectives.

The three reports present data, indicators, and analyses that enable us to understand current trends, identify emerging critical issues, and understand the responses adopted in different contexts.

These are essential tools for providing the scientific community, institutions, and citizens with reliable and comparable information capable of guiding future decisions towards sustainability. Not just a snapshot of the state of the environment, but also a thoughtful reflection and a solid basis for discussion on the priority challenges to be addressed.

Three complementary perspectives will offer a coherent and authoritative vision of the state of the environment in 2025.

Presentation of the Report "Land Consumption, Territorial Dynamics, and Ecosystem Services" - 2025 Edition

The 2025 edition of the Report "Land Consumption, Territorial Dynamics, and Ecosystem Services" will be presented on October 24th. This report is edited by the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA), which monitors land use and land consumption. The Report, along with the maps and indicator databases available for each Italian municipality, compiled by ISPRA and SNPA, provides an updated picture of land cover transformation processes and allows for the assessment of land degradation and the impact of land consumption, urbanization, and infrastructure on the landscape and ecosystem services.
The winning images of the Photo Contest 2025 will be presented during the presentation of the Report.

Earth Jubilee: Towards a New Sustainable Humanism

Under the prestigious recognition of the Medal of the President of the Republic, the conference “Earth Jubilee: Towards a New Sustainable Humanism” will be held on 23 October in the Chamber of Parliamentary Groups. Participants will include the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Hon. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, and H. E. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Culture and founder of the “Courtyard of the Gentiles”.

As part of an agreement between MASE and ISPRA, a project has been launched to explore the operational synergies arising from the "MiTE Anti-Pollution Plan" and national and local planning, which address the response methods, at sea and on the coast, in the event of accidental pollution caused by spills of petroleum products and hazardous and noxious chemical substances (HNS).

Discovering the residual vegetation of a Mediterranean forest in the heart of Rome! Citizen Science activities

As part of the URBAN NATURE initiative promoted by the WWF to promote the value and care of nature in cities for people's well-being, the ISPRA National Biodiversity Network is organizing a one-day meeting between experts and citizens at the Pineto Regional Urban Park in Rome.

The initiative will lead participants to discover the residual vegetation of a Mediterranean forest in the heart of Rome. Along a 3-kilometer trail, researchers from the Institute will address topics related to the importance of land management and the Natura 2000 Network, and lichens as bioindicators and bioaccumulators for monitoring air quality. The endemic species present along the trail will be described, along with the description of the residual vegetation typical of the Mediterranean environment, and the bird species present in the visited area will be "listened to."

Animals, Plants, Rocks and Minerals: The ISPRA Collections > A Multispecies Museum

On Friday, October 3rd, the MUCIV – Museum of Civilizations in Rome presents the new permanent display of the paleontological and litho-mineralogical collections of ISPRA – the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – alongside the solo exhibition Elisa Montessori. The Dream of the Red Room, an unprecedented dialogue between a selection of MUCIV’s Chinese collections and the work of one of Italy’s leading contemporary artists.

Organized in collaboration between ISPRA – Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – and MUCIV – Museum of Civilizations in Rome, with the support of ALES – Arte Lavoro e Servizi S.p.A., an in-house company of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the project for the new permanent exhibition – Animals, Plants, Rocks and Minerals: The ISPRA Collections > A Multispecies Museum – represents the culmination of a process launched in 2022. This process involved the study, restoration, and renewed presentation to the public of collections of extraordinary historical and scientific value.

Comprising more than 150,000 specimens (fossilized animals and plants, rock and mineral samples, geological surveys, scientific instruments, busts, portraits, memorabilia, and archival documentation), the ISPRA collections reflect the work of the Italian Geological Survey and its scholars, who, in line with 19th-century thought, assigned science an essential role in the development of the modern national industry, placing humankind and its control over the environment at the center of complex and long-term processes.

We will focus on the protection and conservation of two protected habitats: Posidonia oceanica meadows and Coralligenous formations, both threatened by various human activities (anchoring, ghost fishing). We will explore their biodiversity and discuss the role of fishers in safeguarding the sea, and how sustainable fishing can contribute to the conservation of habitats and their resources.

Geological Risks

Natural processes, when combined with human vulnerabilities, can cause significant damage to people, property, and the environment. With the help of ISPRA researchers, through presentations of their activities and with the support of experiments, observations, and games, we will learn more about various aspects related to Geological Risks.

Sea and lagoon: a world to discover with ISPRA

Do you want to discover what's hidden in our lagoon and sea? Want to understand the threats that threaten them and how to protect them? Come visit us and become a researcher for a day! We'll be happy to show you, with stands, simple experiments, and role-playing games, what ISPRA does to protect the environment.

Farming the Sea

The educational workshop is an immersive experience on the topic of sustainable aquaculture. It explores the opportunities and purposes of aquaculture (e.g., food production; conservation of threatened species), the environments, techniques, and aquatic species farmed. It also addresses the interactions between aquaculture and marine ecosystems in a changing climate.

Towards More Sustainable Behaviors through EMAS

Through games and other activities, we will learn what EMAS is: the environmental certification recognized at the European level, which demonstrates the commitment of organizations and companies to respecting the environment, being transparent with the public, and continuously improving sustainable practices.

Citizen Science in Tiber

We will guide participants in an environmental monitoring activity on the Tiber River, collecting water samples and analyzing them with portable kits to detect nitrates and phosphates. Together, we will learn what these parameters indicate, the sources of pollution, and the importance of protecting the quality of our rivers.

Participation recommended for both children and adults.

Tiber River, Fantastic Mollusks and Where to Find Them

Presentation of the citizen science project "#teveremolluschifantastici…e dove trovarli" aimed at raising awareness of river biodiversity and the importance of conserving water resources, using freshwater mollusks as flagship species turned upside down.

Bees, Pollinators, Pollen, and Biodiversity

ISPRA researchers will explain the ecological role of pollinating insects and pollen, as well as the Pollnet network. There will be a focus on the life of honeybees, with insights into the social habits of these insects. ABC ISPRA Environment Biodiversity Conservation

Exhibition stand featuring research activities on wildlife and our territories. The delicate balance of Italian biodiversity, from endemic species to invasive alien species, as explored by the research community. Air emissions

Information will be provided on the various sectors that produce atmospheric emissions and the size of each of them in the national total. Viewing the historical series allows us to observe the evolution of emissions over time, including specific examples.
