World Oceans Day

ISPRA celebrated World Oceans Day with two events: on Monday 7 June the webinar "Strategy for the marine environment" was held, on Tuesday 8 on  RaiPlay  the special "And how is the sea?" led by Piero Angela attended by Minister Cingolani and an ISPRA researcher.

Waiting for the World Oceans Day

The first of June will be inaugurated by the United Nations and UNESCO, with the International Oceanographic Commission, the Decade of Marine Sciences for the Sustainable Development of Oceans and Seas, with the aim of promoting global solutions to protect the oceans and their resources. On June 8, it will be World Oceans Day.
ISPRA, engaged in updating the Marine Strategy Measures Program, in support of the MiTE, organizes a webinar on the "sea", addressing all those technical, scientific and information aspects on activities for the safeguarding of vital human heritage.
The meeting, moderated by Fabio Gallo, host of RAI Linea Blu, addresses the problems of the sea deriving from climate change, pollution, marine litter, overfishing, alien species, seen from the perspective of ISPRA researchers and experts of the MiTE

World Environment Day 2021

Saturday 5 June it is celebrated the World Environment day

This year the topic is the "Restoration of the ecosystem", with the aim to contrast and stop the damages against the Planet. During the day it will also be launched the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration introduced with the global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmland, from mountain tops to the depths of the sea.

Wetland biodiversity and crayfish

Threats and concrete conservation actions
On the occasion of the European Day of Parks, the Life Claw Project organizes a webinar to discuss, together with numerous experts, wetlands: areas rich in biodiversity, which perform fundamental functions for human well-being. In particular, it will be one of the most endangered species of these environments: the native crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes, and the concrete initiatives that have been carried out to contain the spread of invasive alien species, which threaten its survival.

On the occasion of the European Day of Parks, the Pantelleria Island National Park is organizing the conference "Biodiversity: a value. Protection of biodiversity and good practices of Sustainable Development in line with the "Man and Biosphere - MAB UNESCO" program, in which  an ISPRA researcher will participate with a speech on the implementation of the Habitat Directive in Italy.

On the bees road

World Bee Day was proclaimed by the United Nations on May 20, a day to remind  the importance that bees have for the entire planet given their fundamental role in maintaining biodiversity.

An ISPRA and AAIS project for the bees protection and their ecosystem.
ISPRA with the Social Integration Assistance Association (AAIS) has carried out an experimental and educational apiary within the program "APIABILI SAVE THE PLANET YOUR FUTURE IN OUR WINGS" (Project funded by the Department of Social Policies, Welfare and Local Authorities of the Lazio region).
The first meeting is held today on the occasion of World Bee Day. Established in 2017 with a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, the day aims to bring to the attention of citizens, the media and political decision-makers the importance of bees and in general of all pollinators: bees, wasps, butterflies , ladybugs, spiders, reptiles, birds, even mammals. Bees and pollinators are essential for food security, the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people, and for the functioning of ecosystems and habitat conservation.

Three events with scientists and intellectuals

On the occasion of World Biodiversty Day 2021 and within the week nature organized by the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITE), ISPRA is organizing two events (20 and 22 May) where exponents of politics and science will meet and culture.
The topic of debate, called "We are part of the Solution", aims to provide contributions relating to the loss of biodiversity, to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity itself and a fair and just sharing of the benefits deriving from it. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has chosen the slogan "We are part of the Solution". This slogan was decided to give continuity to that of the 2020 Day, "Our solutions are in nature", to emphasize that nature resides the answer to the challenges to proceed towards sustainable development.

Agreement signed between ISPRA and the Italian Botanical Society for the structuring of a national database on Italian fungal species

Fungi are important components of the ecosystem because they participate in the decomposition processes of organic material present in the soil and regulate the balance and exchange of nutrients between plant species. These characteristics make them perfect indicators of biodiversity and the quality of an ecosystem.

Target 30% by 2030: healthy ecosystem for the Planet

How can we commit ourselves to obtain more protected areas and more protection of biodiversity?
Starting from the state of arts of the nature in the World, EU and  Italy, Legambiente will organize a meeting to debate the contribution that Italy can produce to the achievement of the global objectives of the decade 2020/2030 which aims to place at least  under protection 30% of the surface areas and oceans of the world.

Word Migratory Bird Day

The World Migratory Bird Day a global campaign which aims to raise awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.
This year’s theme “Sing, Fly, Soar – Like A Bird!” focuses on the phenomena of “bird song” and “bird flight” as a way to inspire and connect people of all ages around the globe in their shared desire to protect and celebrate migratory birds. The day also serves as a reminder that migratory birds are in serious decline, and need international action to ensure their survival.

City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge (CNC), started in 2016, is a is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see observations of nature, find the most species. All the cities included in the challenge can register on an application,  Natusfera o Inaturalist, the most number of naturalistic observation observed in their cities

Wolf returns in the Circeo National Park

The wolf is returning to occupy many of the areas from which it had disappeared due to direct persecution by man. For about a year, sightings of some specimens have also been recorded within the territory of the Circeo National Park, where already in the summer of 2020 the Institute of Applied Ecology, on behalf of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Biodiversity and Parks , and with the support of the Carabinieri Biodiversity Department of Fogliano, had detected the presence of a couple in the forest and a female. Genetic analysis found the individuals to be wolves.

How to contribute with the tourism and the green action at the Planet sustainability?

The event will be held the 22 april, day in which is celebrated the Earth World Day. 
After more than a year from the pandemic and the world crisis of important sector of like tourism and culture, the online event aims to contribute to the enhancement and sustainability of territories, biodiversity and cultural diversity as a heritage of our planet.

Coexisting with the bears in Trentino

The conference will be an opportunity to explore the theme of peaceful coexistence with bears, and discuss how to develop it in the province of Trento. The meeting will be attended by Italian experts and scientists, together with Canadian researchers who have been working for decades to prevent accidents between bears and humans.

Second scientific conference of LIFE Perdix

The webinar cycle of the LIFE Perdix project will start the 23 April, with the first meeting on the monitoring methods of the wildlife. The second meeting, on genetics for species conservation and health monitoring, will be held on 30 April. Finally, the third webinar on ecosystem functions in favor of species conservation will take place on 7 May.

For a biological transition

The Italian biologic sector has a leading position in Europe and in the world. Italy has a percentage of agricultural area destined for organic farming that is double the European average and over 80,000 companies that operate exclusively or partially in the sector. European policies, starting with the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies, have set a target of 25% of organic land by 2030, thus tripling the European average.

Sea National Day

A live video on the social networks of the Ministry of Ecological Transition to celebrate the National Day of the Sea, Sunday 11 April, with the aim to raise awareness on its protection and talk about this important natural resource with prestigious guests.
Ideally Minister Roberto Cingolani will cut the ribbon at 3 pm. This event will be followed by a brief interview with the director general for the sea and coasts Carlo Zaghi, who will illustrate the actions implemented by the Mite and the system of marine protected areas.
Numerous videos made by Italian marine protected areas will be screened, interspersed with interventions by representatives of the Coast Guard, Marevivo, Legambiente and Greenpeace. An ISPRA researcher will talk about the Marine Strategy and the role of the research.

National monitoring of the wolf

For the first time since the wolf was protected, the national institutions join forces to photograph the distribution and consistency simultaneously from the Alps to Calabria, using advanced sampling designs and standardized protocols, developed by ISPRA

Presented the Fourth Report on the state of natural capital in Italy"

On April 7, the "Fourth Report on the state of natural capital in Italy" was presented by videoconference, in the presence of the Minister for Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani, which, after the approval, it will be sent to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy. The plenary meeting of the Committee for natural capital was attended by among others, in addition to the director general of the Mite for the naturalistic heritage Antonio Maturani, the Minister of Infrastructures and Sustainable Mobility Enrico Giovannini, the Minister of Agricultural Policies Stefano Patuanelli, the Minister of Tourism Massimo Garavaglia, the Deputy Minister of Economy Laura Castelli, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor Rossella Accoto, the Undersecretary of the South Dalila Nesci and the president of ISPRA Stefano Laporta.

Agreement signed between ISPRA and Association Mediterranean Project

After one year of meeting, it was finally signed the agreement between ISPRA and ASM boat with the aim to collect information on the marine and coastal environment, under the direction of ISPRA researchers

Also for 2020, Piero Genovesi, Head of the Wildlife Coordination Service of ISPRA has been included the list of the Most Cited Researchers in the World by Web of Science (Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers 2020).

Festival "I'm not afraid of the wolf"

From 22 to 27 March the #iononhopauradellupo 2021 Festival returns in a new digital version and strictly free. Every evening, from 6.30 pm a live streaming "talk" on topics related to the world of fauna and nature with experts to try to understand the problems related to the environment, its protection, with a look towards the future of conservation and coexistence with large carnivores, but not only.
