Greenwashing and social washing, an obstacle to the just ecological transition

The term "sustainability", in Italy as in the world, is by now inflated, widespread among politics, the media, schools, the advertising world. The risk is that this word could lose its effectiveness and be used improperly. And not only in the case of communication strategies with misleading messages from an environmental point of view (greenwashing), but also when these operations concern the social plan (social washing). ASviS has actively contributed to the dissemination of the values ​​of the 2030 Agenda in society: now the time has come to safeguard them, identifying false cases and promoting the more valid ones. To do this, it is necessary to equip oneself with analysis tools, strengthen the multi-stakeholder approach and produce concrete actions, such as a pact between consumers and producers against greenwashing.

Communicate the environment

As part of the Rome Science Festival (18-23 April 2023), at the Auditorium Parco della Musica it will be held the second preparatory event of the SNPA National Conference "Communicate the environment" (Wednesday 19 April from 9.30 to 14) with some protagonists of the world of information and environmental divulgation to analyze how we are reporting the environment through the media and how we will be called to do so in the future.

This event will be an opportunity to discuss how to make environmental information and think about current events, also in the light of the rediscovered space that science has had after the pandemic, in a context particularly suitable for talking about these issues which is the annual appointment with the Rome Science Festival.

39th plenary meeting of the EPA Network

ISPRA President Stefano Laporta and General Director  Maria Siclari attended the 39th plenary meeting of the EPA Network in Brussels. Among the topics addressed, the need to develop cooperation and the arguments of the interest group on sustainable finance and to make it more effective for the stakeholders involved. ISPRA is working on green finance with a task force to help operators understand environmental data.

In the last thirty years, the theme of sustainability and holistic models for measuring the performance of organizations have been at the center of the research and promotion of virtuous management systems by the University Consortium in Engineering for Quality and Innovation , for short QUINN (formerly Qualital).
The guidelines are a new element to support businesses, especially SMEs, in the process of improving their competitiveness.
In the development of this research, ISPRA was involved with a leading role with which the QUINN university consortium has had a collaboration protocol in the field of research and training for years.

Presentation of the 3rd ASviS Report on the sustainability of the Territories
The presentation of the ASviS Report on Territories 2022 will be held on Tuesday 6 December at 10.00. The document includes a review of the international and European experiences of territorialisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030 and the state of implementation of the National Strategy , regional strategies and metropolitan agendas for sustainable development.

Sustainable mobility in urban areas: the current situation and future prospects

The issue of sustainable mobility is one of the most important challenges that urban areas are called to face. Excessive use of private vehicles is responsible for emissions of polluting and climate-altering gases into the atmosphere, accidents, noise pollution.

The conference aims to enhance all aspects of sustainable mobility that are addressed by stakeholders. Interventions are planned to illustrate the trend of emissions related to transport and the scenarios envisaged based on the most recent national regulatory acts (ISPRA), data on the car fleet and accidents (ACI), data on shared mobility (Observatory on sharing mobility) and on local public transport (ASSTRA), data on consumption and energy efficiency in the transport sector (ENEA).

Strategies for a sustainable infrastructure

The event will be dedicated to the theme of sustainable infrastructures, a transversal element for the entire 2030 Agenda. The first part is dedicated to the Position Paper of sustainable infrastructures, which will be presented by the Coordinator of the WG Goal 9 and by the other Coordinators of the WGs most relevant to the theme. 

2022 Ecolabel Award - 30 years of EU Ecolabel. Analysis and perspectives

On 14 October ISPRA and the Ecolabel and Ecoaudit Committee present the fifth edition of the "Ecolabel Award 2022 - 30 years of EU Ecolabel. Analysis and perspectives ”, in the Villa Celimontana in Rome, headquarters of the Italian Geographic Society.

The event that rewards the Italian companies that have distinguished themselves for an effective dissemination and promotion of the "EU Ecolabel" brand for certified products and services, will also be an opportunity to celebrate 30 years of the EU Ecolabel and promote the exchange of experiences and the birth of cooperations between companies that with dedication and commitment have believed in this tool and have spread the knowledge among consumers.

The event, organized by Istat and ASviS, is an opportunity to investigate the issues related to the measurement of sustainable development, with particular reference to new information needs.

50 years lost, how is the soil?

The first part of the event reminds us that 2022 is a special year: 50 years have passed since the 1972 UN Conference in Stockholm, where the economic and environmental dimensions were first connected; 50 years have passed since the publication of the famous report "Limits to growth" of the Club of Rome; 30 years have passed since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit; the world is halfway to achieving the 2030 Agenda Goals set in 2015. The panel aims to show the unsustainability of an economic model that continues to guide the action of governments around the world, despite being at least 50 years that the consequences dictated by business as usual are known.
In the second part of the event the issue of soil degradation will be addressed.

Indicators, indices and scenarios for the analysis of the main environmental trends

On 28 September ISPRA is presenting the methodological document "Indicators, index and scenarios for the analysis of the main environmental trends". The publication analyzes the main emerging environmental issues (natural capital, climate change, circular economy and environment and health) through three different approaches whose common thread is the use of the indicators present in the Environmental indicators database.

The first relates the trends of the environmental indicators and the regulatory changes of reference, the second proposes a description of the trends of the main environmental issues using composite index, finally, the third describes the process of construction of environmental scenarios.

Creating environmental and social conditions to develop sustainable cities and communities is one of the challenges we are called to respond to in the near future. Nature-based solutions, inspired by the functioning of natural ecosystems, can be an active tool for sustainable management of urban areas, to address in an integrated way the environmental and social problems caused by global and climate change

Walking through the environment

“Walking through the environment” is an ISPRA publication aimed at an audience of young students and non-experts. The Ministry of education recognizes it as a contribution to the “RiGenerazione Scuola” National Plan.
The virtual walk stretches through six environmental paths: Crossing the city; Trip to the countryside; Towards the sea; Going up the river; Back home, it comes full circle; Education, a sustainability agenda.

International conference on Sustainability Analysis regard theoretical perspectives and tools for policy makers, ICSA 2022

The SIS DIAS group - Data, Indicators and Analysis for Sustainability of the Italian Statistical Society and the Department of Social Sciences and Economics of the Sapienza University of Rome will organize the First International Conference on Sustainability Analysis regard theoretical perspectives on 14 and 15 July and tools for policy makers, ICSA 2022.

Presentation of the SNPA Report "Cities in transition: the Italian capitals towards environmental sustainability"

Online event for the presentation of the Report of the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) "Cities in transition: the Italian capitals towards environmental sustainability" which proposes, for the first time, a transversal reading of the quality of the urban environment through three different interpretative keys - livability, circularity and resilience to climate change - evaluating its evolution in recent years.

The event will be an opportunity to present the products realized, the evaluation methodology adopted and the main results emerged, with the aim of promoting a discussion between experts and administrators on emerging environmental challenges in the Italian regional capitals.

The Multipass project in support of the Regional Sustainable Development Strategy

The meeting aims is to involve the social actors in the process of supporting the Basilicata Regional Landscape Plan, through the promotion and dissemination of the "Multipass Project" portal tool, which allows to report areas and assets of particular worthy landscape interest of protection.

On the road to sustainability: hydrogen destination

The role of hydrogen will be decisive in the energy transition process to decarbonise the so-called 'hard to abate' sectors, such as heavy industry, road transport of goods and, in a second phase, also shipping and aviation. A recognized role of Europe with its strategy for H2, and also of Italy, which has allocated over 3.5 billion euros in PNRR for the development of this sector.

The number 1/2022 of the periodical "Innovations for environmental sustainability" is available on the website of the GELSO database (Local Management for Environmental Sustainability). The upcoming issue is dedicated to the topic of indoor air quality and analyzes some initiatives to identify the causes of the spread of pollutants in indoor air and possible interventions aimed at reducing their presence, with specific reference to school buildings.

The webinar will be held on February 24 in which the winning photos of the contest will be awarded. The photographs that entered the competition had to illustrate examples of sustainable transition. Territories that change to host the many renewable plants necessary to reach the expected targets, industrial plants that are innovated, new forms of mobility and transport, cities that change to be restored.

International day of Women and Girls in Science

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established in 2015 by the UN National Assembly, and sponsored by UNESCO, to raise awareness and inviting member states, universities, society in general "to promote the full and equal participation of women and girls in science, education, training, employment and decision-making processes ".

On 2 December ASVIS will disclose the results of the second edition of the Report on the Territories, a tool that aims to measure the positioning of local authorities with respect to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

ISPRA's public value for sustainability. What contribution to effective implementation of the PNRR?

The pandemic has accelerated the review of organizational processes in many public and private entities. ISPRA started an organizational innovation process already in July 2019, with the aim of making its processes functional to the needs of the main stakeholders and to enhance the skills in sustainable development necessary to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the European Green Deal.
