The need for environmental remediation of an ever increasing number of contaminated sites pushes towards the development of innovative technologies for characterization, monitoring and intervention that allow a rapid and efficient recovery of the areas to be remediated.

Geomorphological survey

The inaugural and training event of the Winter School, promoted by the University and dedicated to Geomorphological Survey, will be held on 21 January at the Geology Pole of the University of Camerino.

Presentation of Earth Technology Expo 2022

On Tuesday 11 January the 2022 edition of Earth Technology Expo will be presented in Rome, which will be held in Florence from 5 to 8 October.
Catastrophic Pandemic, the technological breakthrough of PNRR for cities and smart services, the control of the Earth from Space, resilience, adaptation, prevention, management of meteorological and natural risks will be the main issues addressed during the new edition of Earth Technology Expo.

First Day of Geology and History: Ghost cities: ghost towns between history and geology

ISPRA, the Italian Geographic Society and SIGEA offer six days of educational and scientific seminars, which will constitute a training course on natural hazards, historical research and the evolution of the landscape. The goal is to focus attention on the importance of the analysis of historical and cartographic sources for the study of natural phenomena.The study days will also be an opportunity to share with the national scientific world and analyze the importance of the multidisciplinarity of studies and the short border that separates geology from historical-archaeological research for a careful reading of the territory. The theme of the first day will concern the Ghost Cities or the abandoned villages of Italy

30th International Cartographic Conference - ICC2021

The International Cartographic Exhibition (ICE) will be held in Fllorence from 14 to 18 december 2021. The opening session will take place in Palazzo Vecchio while the scientific sessions at Department of Education, Languages, Interculture, Literature and Psychology of the University of Florence and at the headquarters of the Military Geographical Institute

Open ecological transition. Where is the Italian environment going?

A country covered almost 40% by forests, more than Germany and Switzerland, and which has seen protected areas of land and sea grow up to 20% of the national territory. Greenhouse gas emissions, which have decreased by 19% in the last 30 years, are reduced, as are the main sources of air pollution. However, ozone, the situation of large urban centers and the Po Valley are worrying. Progress also for the circular economy: the economy uses less and less natural resources, separate waste collection continues to increase and landfill is increasingly reduced. On the other hand, the situation for land consumption is worsening: 60 square kilometers still lost every year or 15 hectares a day.
ISPRA presented the Open Ecological Transition report on 13 December which allows us to interpret the changes that have occurred in recent years in the aspects of the Italian environment.
It is a clear synthesis of the many dynamics that determine the Italian ecological transition, which immediately brings the most important aspects of each problem or phenomenon to the attention of society, highlighting the critical issues but also the results already achieved or achievable.The document is divided into three parts: The Italian environment at a glance, Natural systems, Human systems, for a total of 12 chapters and 66 items.

World Soil Day

World Soil Day is celebrated on 5 December, an anniversary established since 2014 by the UN food agency, the FAO. The theme of this edition is "Stops soil salinization, increases soil productivity". The 2021 campaign aims to focus on the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing growing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinization, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health.

The contribution of research on environment and health in contaminated sites

On December 3, the conference "The contribution of research on the environment and health in contaminated sites" is held in Rome, organized by the Ministry of University and Research, CISAS - International Center for Advanced Studies on Environment, Ecosystem and Human Health and by the Department Earth System Sciences and Technologies of the CNR.
The general director of ISPRA, Alessandro Bratti, is participating in the conference with a speech on "The activities and proposals of ISPRA / SNPA on the subject of the environment and health".

Disused mining sites: "For their future and that of the territories on which they insist, today we are focusing on the development of new tourism, which knows how to combine the safety of abandoned and often contaminated places, with the protection of an important historical and cultural heritage The Remi Network - National Network of Museums and Italian Mining Parks, promoted by ISPRA, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Lombardy Region and AIPAI Patrimonio Industriale was founded in 2015 with the participation of 40 disused mining sites. Flowpath 2021

On 1-3 December, the 5th National Flowpath Hydrogeology Conference 2021 will take place in Naples, organized by the Italian Committee of the International Association of Hydrogeologists IAH. The Conference is now a reference for the state of the art of research and applications of hydrogeology in the public and private sector.

The geological walks of ISPRA

As part of the Rome Science Festival, ISPRA is organizing two geological walks on 27 and 28 November: "The river and the city: traces of the historic floods of the Tiber" and "Rome between two fires: how natural events have changed the morphology of the city".

ReMi guidelines: the first training course for mining operators has been concluded

The first training course for mining operators was held in Sessa, Switzerland, and in Saint Marcel, Val d'Aosta. The course has been organized according to the guidelines of the ReMi Network, the national network of mining parks and museums, coordinated by ISPRA, with the aim of promoting conservation, enhancement and protection of national mining heritage.

On the occasion of the new European soil strategy, ISPRA publishes the tenth video made as part of the Soil4Life project

The new soil strategy has been published by the European Commission which defines a framework with concrete measures for the protection, restoration and sustainable use of soils. The goal is to increase the carbon capture capacity of agricultural land, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soils and ensure that by 2050 all soil ecosystems are in good condition.

ISPRA data on lindane presented today in Brussels

The Italian data produced by ISPRA on the presence of the pesticide lindane in European soils were presented today in Brussels in the presence of several members of the European Parliament, including the Vice-President of the Environment Commission, Hon. César Luena, and officials of the European Commission. The contribution of the ISPRA Geological Survey of Italy was decisive for the success of the study. The launch of the new European Soil Strategy is expected tomorrow.

A geological itinerary on the superficial faulting of the 2016 earthquakes along the Monte Vettore - Monte Bove fault: a geosite to be enhanced and preserved

ISPRA and Monti Sibillini National Park have organized a geological itinerary on the evidence of reactivation up to the surface of the Monte Vettore-Monte Bove fault from which the seismic sequence that hit Central Italy in 2016 originated.

The monitoring of landslides for the management of natural risks

The conference "The monitoring of landslides for the management of natural risks", organized by Arpa Lombardia, in collaboration with the Order of Geologists of Lombardy, will be held on 10 November in Milan. An entire day dedicated to the increasingly topical issue of hydrogeological instability and, in particular, to the design and management of monitoring networks throughout the country.

Environment and health in areas with high environmental impact

The course aims to offer a large spectrum of scientific knowledge of environmental contamination management in areas characterized by significant anthropic impact. It is addressed to professionals, experts and operators in the "environment and health" field to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration on land reclamation and prevention of damage to human health.

The Joint Research Unit EPOS Italy was founded in 2017 to promote the participation of national research institutions and universities in the European research infrastructure EPOS (European Plate Observing System), optimizing the visibility and contributions of the national research system.

The PNRR provides for initiatives aimed at combating hydrogeological instability, reforestation, efficient use of water and improving the quality of inland and marine waters.
In fact, the Plan dedicates Component 4 of this Mission to the safety of the territory, understood as the mitigation of hydrogeological risks, with prevention and restoration interventions, for which knowledge of the territory becomes increasingly strategic.

EO4GEO opportunities for Earth Observation and Geoinformation skills improvement

The objective of this workshop is to highlight how some of the current challenges in terms of skills and training in the Earth Observation and Geographic information (EO*GI) sector can be addressed using EO4GEO Tools and resources. To this effect, several stakeholders from the EO*GI sector will share their experience with resources on space-geoinformation, developed in the context of the EO4GEO Blueprint project. Presentation of the SNPA guidelines for landslide monitoring at Remtech Expo 2021

On 21 September 2021 at 2.30 pm, as part of Remtech Expo 2021, a webinar to present the SNPA guidelines for monitoring landslides will be held. The Guidelines aim to harmonize procedures and provide references and criteria for the design, installation, management and maintenance of landslide monitoring networks, as well as for the dissemination of data.

RemTech Expo 2021

RemTech Expo is the only international event specializing in the protection and sustainable development of territories - rehabilitation (reclamation, circular economy), natural risks (coasts, instability, climate, seismic), regeneration (ports, cities, cultural heritage, industry).
