Only One Earth

The Inter University Center for the Environment (CIPLA) - University of Perugia organizes a day of study and analysis on the theme established by the United Nations Organization to celebrate World Environment Day (WMD). World Environmental Day is a celebration proclaimed by the UN in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference, where the first environmental protection program was established. The stable date is June 5, the first celebration took place in 1974 under the title "Only One Earth".

In Italy, national energy consumption per unit of GDP is among the lowest in Europe. The share of renewable energy is second only to Sweden

In Italy, energy consumption per unit of GDP is reduced by 16% from 2005 to 2021, while greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP are reduced by 27.2%. Similarly, since 2005, greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy consumed have decreased in all the main productive sectors: from -6.6% for agriculture to -14.1% for industry.

In terms of renewable sources, Italy is second only to Sweden among the main European countries, in terms of share of gross domestic consumption of energy from renewable sources. The national share of renewable energy in gross domestic consumption is 19.4% in 2021, while the European average is 17.7%.

Presentation of the “MobilitAria 2023” report

The sixth Mobilitaria Report 2023 was drawn up by the Kyoto Club together with the CNR - Institute on Atmospheric Pollution. Among the main contents of the 2023 report is an overall analysis of the concentrations of pollutants monitored in recent years in metropolitan cities, and an analysis of the mobility situation in the capital municipalities of metropolitan cities and of the measures envisaged by the Urban Plans for Sustainable Mobility.

Presentation "Atlas of Environmental Data "

As part of the Green Med Symposium, ISPRA presents a new publication which, thanks to maps, graphs and tables, will allow you to visualize the geographical distribution of the main environmental information.

Five thematic sections - geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere - to raise awareness of future challenges and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals, thanks to accurate and up-to-date scientific information.

The aim is to provide scientific information on soil, water, biodiversity, air, climate, waste, energy and the environmental impacts of human activities and, at the same time, to help raise awareness of environmental challenges.
The Atlas of environmental data integrates the EcoAtlante, the portal developed by ISPRA which offers a series of interactive cartographic paths useful for exploring the environmental data collected and cataloged in the National Environmental Information System, in line with the database of the Yearbook of environmental data, Yearbook of environmental data, which in line with the main national and international inter-thematic core sets, makes available over 300 statistical indicators on the state of the environment in Italy.

Emissions conference 2023

RSE (Research on the Energy System) and the National System for the Protection of the Environment organize, within the framework of the ISPRA-RSE Memorandum of Understanding and in collaboration with UNI, ACCREDIA and UNICHIM, the "Emissions Conference 2023", in virtual mode .
The Conference is organized in four morning sessions on 10, 17, 24 and 31 May, of which the first three are fopen to all, the last fourth reserved for the SNPA structures and Public Administrations.

In 2021, greenhouse gas emissions in Italy will start to grow again after the stop of the pandemic period: in just one year (2020-2021) the values ​​show a sharp increase (+8.5%), despite recording a decrease of 20% compared to 1990, thanks to the growth in recent years of energy production from renewable sources (hydroelectric and wind), energy efficiency in industrial sectors and the transition to the use of fuels with a lower carbon content. But the reduction is not enough: emissions are 11 million tonnes above the target set for 2021.

A situation which, according to estimates, seems destined to continue not only in 2022, but also in future years. In fact, the scenarios to 2030 are not very promising: a low reduction in emissions in the transport and heating sectors is expected and a misalignment with the objectives established by Effort Sharing which in 2030 could exceed 15 million tonnes. It is therefore essential to reverse the trend if we want to meet the emission reduction targets.

Change the air: Aer Nostrum and future scenarios in port cities

The final event of the Aer Nostrum project will be held in Genoa, an opportunity to analyze the various aspects concerning the improvement of air quality in port cities. Among the various topics, the regulatory context, monitoring tools and future scenarios for our cities. The day will be an opportunity to discuss results and prospects.

On 21 March, on the occasion of the XVI edition of the National Pollen Day, the Italian Society of Aerobiology, Medicine and the Environment (S.I.A.M.A.) is organizing the seminar "Environmental monitoring and prevention of risks from pollen allergies".

Estimated 0.9% increase in emissions in 2022 compared to 2021

On the basis of the data available for 2022, as a result of the recovery of economic activities on the one hand and the containment of natural gas consumption on the other, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions is estimated at national level; in fact, in 2022 emissions on the national territory increased by 0.9% compared to 2021 against a 2.6% increase in GDP.

For a national action plan to reduce methane emissions

On 21 December, in the Chamber of Deputies, the document "Guidelines for an Italian strategy for reducing methane emissions from the natural gas supply chain 2022" will be presented and the contribution, after COP 27, of the Working Table with companies and institutions for the implementation of the EU Regulation and the Global Methane Pledge Energy Pathway.

The management of odorous impacts - School odors 2022

The initiative is organized by Rse (Research on the Energy System) and the National System for the Protection of the Environment (SNPA), in collaboration with Uni, Accredia and Unichim and resumes the experiences and the path started in the past aimed at increasing knowledge in the management of odorous impacts.
The program includes 4 sessions, on the dates of 4-6-11-13 October, of which 3 are open to all the public and the last one is aimed exclusively at members of the SNPA system and the Public Administration.

G20 Environment and Climate Ministers meeting in Indonesia

As part of the activities of the G20 in 2022, chaired by Indonesia, on 31 August 2022 the meeting of the Ministers of the Environment and Climate (Joint Environment and Climate Minister's Meeting ( JECMM) 2022), preceded on 29 and 30 August by the meeting of the two G20 working groups on environmental issues (Environment Deputies Meeting) and on climate sustainability (Climate Sustainability Working Group), which will work in parallel in the 3rd EDM-CSWG.

The climate crisis

On 13 July ISPRA is organizing an in-depth day dedicated to climate change.

50th World Environment Day
With the aim to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference, the first world conference on the environment, the UNEP (United Nation Environment Program) has chosen the #OnlyOneEarth theme. In the Universe there are billions of galaxies, in ours there are billions of planets, but there is only one planet Earth. In order for all its inhabitants to survive, humans must lead a sustainable lifestyle, safeguarding limited resources and remaining in harmony with nature. In the Conference of 1972, 26 principles were identified on the conservation and enhancement of the environment, which after 50 years remain a useful guide to follow.

Publisehd the Position Paper on the air quality of the ASVIS

The Position Paper on air quality has been published on the website of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development, produced by the members of the ASVIS Working Group for Goal 11 co-coordinated by ISPRA.
The document highlights some proposals for priority actions to reduce the number of premature deaths following exposure to air pollutants.

Atmospheric emissions and characterization of the national energy system

On April 14, the webinar dedicated to the presentation of data and information on the emission status will take place with an in-depth study on energy efficiency in Italy.
To evaluate the policies implemented at national level to tackle climate change and compliance with the emission reduction commitments set out in international agreements, it is essential to monitor the evolution of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, which will be presented in the course. of the event. The post COP-26 and the role of the university education

The session "The world of research" will have the participation of the ISPRA President, Stefano Laporta.

Open ecological transition. Where is the Italian environment going?

A country covered almost 40% by forests, more than Germany and Switzerland, and which has seen protected areas of land and sea grow up to 20% of the national territory. Greenhouse gas emissions, which have decreased by 19% in the last 30 years, are reduced, as are the main sources of air pollution. However, ozone, the situation of large urban centers and the Po Valley are worrying. Progress also for the circular economy: the economy uses less and less natural resources, separate waste collection continues to increase and landfill is increasingly reduced. On the other hand, the situation for land consumption is worsening: 60 square kilometers still lost every year or 15 hectares a day.
ISPRA presented the Open Ecological Transition report on 13 December which allows us to interpret the changes that have occurred in recent years in the aspects of the Italian environment.
It is a clear synthesis of the many dynamics that determine the Italian ecological transition, which immediately brings the most important aspects of each problem or phenomenon to the attention of society, highlighting the critical issues but also the results already achieved or achievable.The document is divided into three parts: The Italian environment at a glance, Natural systems, Human systems, for a total of 12 chapters and 66 items.

Conference "Gaseous polluting emissions of industrial origin - The management of emissions from industrial plants for restarting"

The conference is organized by ISPRA, in collaboration with RSE S.p.A - Research on the Energy System, ACCREDIA, UNI and UNICHIM. The initiative is continuing the positive experience already had in 2020 and which recorded a high participation. Greenhouse gas emissions: in 2021 estimated increase of 4.8% compared to 2020. Down compared to 2019 (-4.2%)

Based on the data available for 2021, as a consequence of the recovery of economic activities, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions at national level is expected; in fact in 2021 emissions on the national territory increased by 4.8% compared to 2020 against an increase in GDP of 6.1%; compared to 2019, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 4.2%.

One Health: environment, health and society

On the occasion of World Environment Day,  ISPRA and the Interuniversity Center for the Environment (CIPLA) will present the seminar One Health: environment, health and society (protection of the atmosphere and protection of life).
The day, organized in collaboration with the University of Perugia, the University of Urbino, Carlo Bo, and the Free International University of Social Studies Guido Carli, LUISS, aims to raise public awareness on the issues of air quality and health protection through the integration of different disciplines according to the One Health approach.

The national project  Borghi del Respiro aims intends to enhance the vitality and livability of small municipalities in hilly or mountainous sparsely populated areas in which the regulatory standards defined by Legislative Decree 155/2010 are respected for the main pollutants, for the protection of human health and vegetation, in the principles of Sustainable Development defined by AGENDA 2030, with particular regard to the protection of respiratory health.

Trend of atmospheric emissions and scenarios in Italy. Focus on road transport

ISPRA is inviting the public to follow in the 15 and 16 April the streaming dedicated to the data and information related to the emissions situation in Italy.
