DESCRIPTION:The alpine environment\, and the Dolomites in particular\, rep
 resented the most extreme conditions in which the troops of the opposing a
 rmies where fighting during the First World War. The difficulties were not
  only due to the topography of the Dolomites\, but also the geological and
  geomorphological features of the area. The role of geologists and cartogr
 aphers of the time has been underestimated until today and will be highlig
 hted with a specific conference that aims to remember from a historically 
 and geologically point of view the places\, events and characters involved
  in the conflict for the celebration of the centenary of the Italian parti
 cipation in the First World War.  Organized by ISPRA\, the Italian Geologi
 cal Society\, Geologische Bundesanstalt of Vienna and MUSE\, the conferenc
 e will provide four thematic sessions: Geology and war\; the  mountain st
 udied\, the mountain domesticated and wounded\, the mountain remembers
