Started the 24th session of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological (SBSTTA) of the UN Convention for the biological diversity

One year late, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, last 3 May was  opened in virtual mode the 24th session Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological (SBSTTA) of the UN Convention for the biological diversity

The purpose of the meeting, which will last until 13 June, is to make the advancment of  the scientific-negotiation process in view of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-15), which should have been held in 2020 in China, currently scheduled for October 2021. On the occasion of this summit, the Global Biodiversity Framework, a global action plan for post 2020, with medium-term (2030) and long-term (up to 2050) objectives and commitments, will have to be approved, aimed at to stop and and reverse the dramatic decline in biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of biodiversity.

The Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological (SBSTTA-24) of the UN Convention for the biological diversity) has the task of adopting a series of documents on the following items on the agenda:

  • The post-2020 global biodiversity framework (post -2020 Global Biodiversity Framework)
  • Synthetic biology
  • Risk assessment and risk management of Living
  • Modified Organisms
  • Marine and coastal biodiversity
  • Biodiversity and agriculture
  • Work program of the Intergovernmental Platform for Science and Policy on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
  • Biodiversity and health
  • Invasive alien species

The meeting is attended by experts from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and ISPRA.
