International maritime forum on sustainability in the oceans

 


At the end of October in the cities of  Marseilles and Toulon has been held the first edition of BioMarine, international maritime forum on sustainability in the oceans and seas organized under the aegis of the French Presidency of the EU. Major representatives of science, economy and politics took part in it, confronting themselves on the future of the sea and the oceans, form the point of view of sustainable development.
Maritime geopolitics, retreat of glaciers, governance of Mediterranean basin, maritime security and prevention of pollution and maritime disasters were the topics treated.
Great attention was given, also, to the role of the sea and the oceans in the fight against climatic changes. In fact, Renewable energies  of the future coming from sea and oceans which can an energetic reserve alternative to petrol.
Goal of the meeting was to propose a European maritime policy in the world, so to exit innovative and practical solutions for sea and oceans and for sustainable development of all the activities related to the sea. During the opening President Barroso said: “when I decided to launch this new European policy, I intended to take distances from limited sector-based strategy applied to the sea. Today we can say that it exists in Europe a new wide and global governance of maritime affairs.”
Then the Commissioner to Maritime affairs and fisheries Borg declared: “BioMarine offers a good chance to European Commission to start an exchange of ideas with the European parties involved in the maritime sector. Its program confirms the potential of European seas and oceans and encourages a crossed cooperation among policies. This is good omen for the new Integrated Maritime Policy of European Union.”
