Say farewell to mercury

European Council has conclusively approved the regulation which forbids all the exports of mercury from European Union.

On september, 25 European Council has conclusively approved the regulation which forbids all the exports of mercury from European Union. The prohibition constitutes a key move in the EU strategy to reduce the offer of mercury on global market and to limit the emissions in environment of this extremely toxic substance. The rule imposes, starting from March 2011, when the rule will come into force, the obligation to stock safely the disused mercury. The European Commissioner for Environment Stavros Dimas has stated: “mercury represents a threat for human health and for environment in the EU like in the whole world. The important legislastive act approved today will allow to protect citizens reducing significantly the exposition to this extremely toxic metal. We wish that other countries will follow our example and will support our goal to reduce the offer on global market of this dangerous substance.”
