Eurobarometer survey

Nuclear power splits the European opinion

A recent Eurobarometer survey shows that the European opinion is divided on nuclear energy production. In fact 44% of respondents declared to be totally or fairly favorable, while 45% declared to be against. The research shows that the management of radioactive waste is one of the most felt problems by European citizens. As a matter of fact, almost half of those who oppose the nuclear would change their mind if there was a safe and permanent solution for the radioactive waste management.
Compared with the previous survey in 2005, the support to nuclear energy has increased by 7 percentage points.
As for our country, 43% of Italians declared to be fairly or strongly favorable to the production of nuclear energy, showing a strong increase compared to 30% in 2005.
Among the twenty-seven EU countries, the highest percentages favorable to nuclear power were registered in the Czech Republic and Lithuania (64%), Hungary and Bulgaria (63%), Sweden (62%) and Finland (61%) while the lowest at Cyprus (7% in favor), Austria (14% in favor), Malta (15% in favor) and Greece (18% in favor).
