Eurobarometer survey on climatic changes
From a recent survey of the European Commission, made through
Eurobarometer, it shows that more than 70% of European
citizens believes in the fight against climatic changes, but thinks
that EU, Member states and industry are not doing enough for this
purpose. Survey has been done in the spring of 2008, on a specimen
of about 30,000 citizens representing the 27 member states and also
the three candidate countries Croatia, Turkey, Turkish-Cypriot
community and FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).
The interviewees reckon the fight against climatic changes most
urgent problem to contrast and to solve after fight against
poverty, but the 41% of them believe to be not sufficiently
informed. The citizens of northern Europe (Sweden, Finland and
Denmark) and of the Nederland are those who believe to be better
informed, while under the European average are countries with more
recent adhesion to Union (except Slovenia) and the Mediterranean
countries; among those there is Italy, where only 44% believe to be
well informed.
As to other results of the survey, 61% says to have already adopted
some measure to contrast the phenomenon, like doing separate
collection of waste, reducing garbage, decreasing consumption of
water or energy.
About this helpfulness to commit themselves with good practices,
the more willing seem to be the Swedish (87%) and the Slovenians
(79%), while the Italians are on lower positions, with a 49% which
hardly surpasses some of the new states entered in the Union
(Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Baltic Countries).
Another result is that for 56% of European citizens the fight
against climatic changes can have a positive impact on economy.
