New rules for less polluting vehicles

Approved a Directive which forces public and private bodies to consider environmental criteria in the award of contracts for vehicles used for transport.

European Parliament approved a Directive which forces public and private bodies to consider environmental criteria in the award of contracts for vehicles used for transport.
The measure will favour the introduction of low-consumption vehicles, with little environmental impact, encouraging industry to invest and develop more means with these features.
To understand the importance of this Directive and the impact it can have above emissions, we can think that every year the public authorities of EU buy through contracts 110,000 cars, 110,000 light vehicles, 35,000 trucks and 17,000 buses.
With the new rules will be privileged the purchase of more ecological vehicles, with low energetic consumption and low CO2 emissions.
Member states can exclude from the application of the Directive contracts for little quantities and those vehicles used in construction sites, quarries, ports and airports. Another dispensation is for vehicles used by armed forces, civil protection, firefighters, and law and order forces. “European public sector – said European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani – will give the example promoting new technologies for a sustainable transport system.”
