Water and European Parliament

Approved the report by Richard Seeber for a more sustainable use of water

On October, 9, European Parliament has approved the report by Richard SEEBER for a more sustainable use of water with 594 votes, 45 against and 12 abstensions. The Parliament has underlined the need to integrate the problem of water in all EU Policies and has urged local and regional authorities to use more and with more efficacy the funding coming from structural funds, in order to improve and modernize those supply network for water distribution which have become obsolete (in some cases the waste of the public aqueducts can surpass 50%).
The report contains also proposals for financial incentives to promote a more sustainable and efficient use of water, the installation of water meters to measure real consumption and to plan a charge policy that daunts the waste. The Parliament invites the Commission to launch an awareness campaign among community citizens for a better management of water resources and to promote good practices exchange between regions, municipalities and social organizations.
