Emergency earthquake in Northern Italy

All operating units of the Civil National Service, which also is part ISPRA, are currently working to face emergency for the earthquake in  Northern Italy on the night of May 20 - in particular between the territory of Modena, Mantova and Ferrara.
The coordination of operations is organized by Civil Protection Department, which promptly convened in permanent session, the Operational Committee with the task of following the evolution of the event and for providing the update, available at  http://www.protezionecivile.gov.it/

According to the data recorded by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred at a depth of about 6 km, with its epicenter located between the towns of Finale Emila  and San Felice sul Panaro close to Modena and Sermide close to Mantova. At the moment seven victims were found and numerous historical monumental buildings like churches and castles were damaged by the earthquake, as well as the historic centers of some municipalities. The photo, which refers to the collapse of the castle of Finale Emilia, the town hardest hit in the province of Modena, was taken from the site of the Civil Protection.
