Cosmos 482 spacecraft re-enters the atmosphere
The Department of Civil Protection is following the event in close contact with ASI: the probability of a real impact on Italian territory is extremely low and quantifiable at one in a million
The Soviet Cosmos 482 landing module, launched in 1972 towards Venus and remained in orbit for over fifty years due to a failure, is heading towards the atmosphere with an uncontrolled reentry.
At the moment, this re-entry is estimated for May 10, between 3:17 and 12:57. This time window of uncertainty could progressively reduce following further radar detections. According to what was communicated by the Italian Space Agency, based on the C-SSA elaborations of the Air Force, there are two orbits that could potentially affect the Italian territory, each with an amplitude of approximately 200 km, represented in the attached image. The probabilities of a real impact on the Italian territory are extremely low and quantifiable at one in a million.
The first orbit will pass over Italy between 5:03 and 5:04 on May 10, flying over portions of Sardinia and the regions of Central Italy; the second orbit will pass between 11:06 and 11:08 on May 10 and could affect portions of Calabria, Sicily, Piedmont and Liguria. Attached is the image of the trajectories.
The Department of Civil Protection, alerted by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in accordance with the operational procedure on uncontrolled re-entries of artificial objects, convened a technical table this afternoon with representatives of ASI, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Office of the Military Advisor, the Ministry of the Interior Department of Fire Brigades Central Emergency Directorate, the Ministry of Defense - Joint Operations Command, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), ENAV S.p.А, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and the Special Commission for Civil Protection. The re-entry into the atmosphere of the Cosmos 482 module and the monitoring measures underway were also notified to representatives of the Civil Protection Operations Committee.
