“Educate, communicate, connect”: ISPRA publishes the new report from the Life SIC2SIC project
ISPRA’s new publication is dedicated to the Life SIC2SIC project and is available online in the Environmental Education and Training Notebooks series: “Educate, communicate, connect – The educational format of the Life SIC2SIC project”
The project represents a concrete example of how a well-designed communication strategy can amplify the impact of an environmental plan.
The volume systematizes the extraordinary experience of a bicycle journey of over 5,700 km across the biodiversity of our peninsula, offering an innovative model that combines scientific communication, territorial storytelling, and the protection of the Natura 2000 Network.
Building communication that goes beyond the mere transmission of data, focusing instead on creating an empathetic connection with the territory, with emotion as a driver of knowledge. As emphasized in the volume:
“Environmental education, when strengthened by emotions and direct experience, ceases to be mere information and becomes civic engagement, allowing people to inhabit places not only physically, but spiritually.”
A multidisciplinary journey through the project’s languages
The volume explores environmental communication, analyzing the various tools that helped connect the public with natural heritage:
- Connecting territories and institutions: The mapping of over 100 new cycling routes to narrate the Natura 2000 Network through slow and sustainable mobility, combined with multidisciplinary dialogue with local authorities to transform the perception of protected sites from regulatory constraints into concrete opportunities for development and participation.
- Experiential Educational Format: An in-depth look at direct engagement methodologies, “learning by cycling,” tested with students and citizens.
- Creative Languages and Caviardage®: The use of creative erasure techniques to bring out one’s inner landscape, transforming education into an artistic and participatory activity.
- Storytelling and Travel Diaries: Enhancing subjective narratives through the reflections of walkers and cyclists, capable of humanizing scientific research.
- Multisensory Communication (Art and Science): An analysis of the photographic exhibition “Through Natura 2000,” an immersive experience combining environmental sounds and color sequences that broke down barriers between the public and science.
- Video Communication and Documentation: The story of the journey is further enriched in the appendix with regional videos and the documentary “One Year with Sic2Sic,” produced through dynamic video storytelling using lightweight tools (GoPro, smartphones).
To discover how science and storytelling can come together in a collective and engaging narrative, we invite you to explore the dedicated materials.

Educare, comunicare, connettere - The educational format of the project Life SIC2SIC
This publication represents a practical tool for educators who wish to experiment with creative languages to communicate our natural heritage.
The SIC2SIC project demonstrates that the collection and analysis of scientific data remain “untapped capital” if they are not supported by an effective strategy of sharing and engagement.
