DESCRIPTION:The Mediterranean trout\, a native species at critical risk of
  extinction\, is a symbol of freshwater conservation in the Apennines and 
 Sardinia. Its protection is essential for biodiversity\, which is threaten
 ed by climate change and hybridization with non-native trout.   The  LIFE 
 STREAMS  project has worked on the recovery and conservation of native po
 pulations through monitoring and management\, strengthening their numbers 
 and genetic integrity. It also represents a key component of the   APE –
  Appennino Parco d’Europa   strategy\, launched in the 1990s to support 
 the then-emerging network of protected areas.
