The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is UNEP’s flagship report and provides:
-
Integrated assessments of the state of the global environment
-
Analyses of environmental policies implemented
-
Future scenarios and strategic options for sustainability
The Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of GEO-7 will be officially presented in December 2025 during the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), the world’s highest decision-making body on environmental matters.
The GEO-7 Scoping Document, adopted in December 2022, defines the report’s objectives, structure, and main themes, establishing an approach based on integrated systems and practical solutions.
The document calls on GEO-7 to:
-
Analyze the interactions among air, biodiversity, soil, water, and oceans
-
Highlight the connections between the environment, economy, and human well-being
-
Develop future scenarios: one business-as-usual and two transformative scenarios to support effective policymaking
The report identifies three priority areas for sustainable global change:
-
Reform of food and energy systems
-
Promotion of the circular economy
-
Rethinking economic models, including financial systems, to protect and enhance nature and promote human well-being
With GEO-7, UNEP strengthens its commitment to providing authoritative, action-oriented science, supporting effective policy decisions, and promoting a sustainable and resilient future for the planet and future generations.
Lorenzo Ciccarese from ISPRA participates in the meeting as co-chair.
