GeoSciences RISE project

The GeoSciences RISE project aims to enhance the GeoSciences IR research infrastructure—established under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and coordinated by ISPRA.

Funded by the 2021–2027 National Program for Research, Innovation, and Competitiveness for the Green and Digital Transition (PN RIC), the GeoSciences RISE project seeks to leverage existing scientific and technological assets, while strengthening the transfer of research results to businesses—with a particular focus on the regions of Southern Italy.

GeoSciences RISE will expand the capabilities of the GeoSciences IR digital infrastructure by upgrading existing services and developing new technological solutions.

The project comprises 27 lines of action focused on enhancing the infrastructure, conducting research and development, and updating software products and tools. These activities will be carried out in collaboration with 42 companies—engaged through specific agreements—to bridge the gap between scientific expertise and the needs of the industrial sector. Participating companies will be able to contribute to the testing of new solutions and benefit from the transfer of knowledge and technology, thereby strengthening their innovation capacity and competitiveness while identifying new market opportunities.

Special attention will be given to strategic areas aligned with the National Smart Specialization Strategy (SNSI), such as hydrogeology, geothermal resources, the remediation of contaminated sites, hydrogeochemical monitoring, and the protection of cultural heritage exposed to geological hazards. In these sectors, the development of digital tools and advanced technologies will facilitate the creation of new services and applications, contributing to the sustainable management of resources and the safety of the territory.

The partnership, coordinated by ISPRA and consisting of 15 co-proposing partners, operates through 80 operational units, 60 of which are located in less developed regions. Expected benefits include the improvement of digital services, the acceleration of technology transfer, the development of innovative products and applications, and the strengthening of corporate skills and competitiveness. Through these initiatives, GeoSciences RISE aims to generate new opportunities for economic development and employment, with positive impacts, particularly in Southern Italy. GeoSciences RISE therefore aims to transform the scientific potential of GeoSciences IR into concrete innovation for businesses, consolidating the role of the geosciences as a resource for the ecological transition, the protection of the territory, and the development of the productive sector.
