Let’s play GAMed!

The Mediterranean Action Game

This is the goal of GAMed, the educational game conceived and developed by the Regional Activity Centre for Information and Communication (INFO/RAC). The project was created to bring younger generations closer to the key issues related to the protection of the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas, addressing topics such as UNEP/MAP, the Barcelona Convention, the role of the Regional Activity Centres (RACs), and the importance of environmental governance in a simple and interactive way.

GAMed was also developed with the contribution of students from the “Vito Volterra” Scientific High School in Ciampino, who took part in the School and Work-Based Learning Programme (PFSL) entitled “Environmental Governance in the Classroom: Discovering Actions for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea and Its Coasts,” which recently concluded.

The active involvement of the students helped transform the educational programme into a hands-on co-design experience, encouraging their participation and highlighting the role of younger generations in promoting environmental sustainability and Ocean Literacy. During the Info Day organized as part of the PFSL programme, the students played an active role in sharing the knowledge acquired during the lessons, becoming communicators and ambassadors of these topics for the many participants attending the event. Subsequently, the organization of game sessions provided participants with a concrete example of the interaction between education, research, and public engagement.

Through a playful and participatory approach, GAMed makes complex topics accessible and promotes greater environmental awareness. Designed for young people aged 14 and over, it can be used both individually and in group settings, always with the support of a teacher, educator, or science communicator acting as a Facilitator.

The game is played on a board featuring graphics inspired by the shapes, colours, and symbols of the Mediterranean Sea. Its mechanics alternate between challenge and learning, offering an innovative and engaging way to involve young audiences in issues related to the protection of the Mediterranean and its coastal environments.
