Taormina hosts the SD-WISHEES event dedicated to protecting cultural and environmental heritage from climate-related risks

How can we protect our cultural and environmental heritage in the face of the increasing frequency and intensity of hydroclimatic extreme events?
This question will be at the heart of the event “Protecting Cultural & Environmental Heritage from Hydroclimatic Extremes”, taking place in Taormina on 1 and 2 October 2026. The event is organised within the framework of the European Horizon project SD-WISHEES-Supporting and Developing WIdening Strategies to tackle Hydroclimatic Extreme Events: impacts and Sustainable solutions for cultural heritage, by ISPRA and the project partners.
Over two days, researchers, academics, institutional representatives, funding organisations and representatives of local communities from Europe, the Balkans and Africa will come together to discuss strategies and solutions aimed at strengthening the resilience of cultural and environmental heritage in the face of climate change and hydroclimatic extreme events.
The initiative will focus on the Water–Climate–Cultural Heritage (WCCH) Nexus, promoting an integrated and multidisciplinary approach that connects water, climate, the environment and cultural heritage.

Two days, two perspectives
The first day, 1 October (9:30–16:30), will be dedicated to a national workshop entitled: “Innovative solutions and best practices in the context of the Water–Climate–Cultural Heritage Nexus: a study day supporting hydro-meteorological and marine monitoring and forecasting, hydroclimatic extreme events and their impacts on the environment and cultural heritage in the context of climate change”
The workshop will be hosted at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Taormina.
The event will explore the role of innovative solutions for monitoring and forecasting hydrometeorological and marine phenomena, the contribution of Earth Observation technologies to addressing climate-related challenges, and the role of research and academia in developing resilience strategies at the intersection of water, climate and cultural heritage.
The second day, 2 October (9:30–16:30), will take place at the Palazzo dei Duchi di Santo Stefano and will be dedicated to the international seminar: “Innovative solutions and best practices to protect cultural and environmental heritage assets from increasingly frequent hydroclimatic extreme events”
The seminar will bring together experiences and expertise from different geographical areas, with a particular focus on:
- transnational cooperation between Europe, the Balkans and Africa;
- the involvement of local communities and younger generations in cultural heritage protection;
- best practices and innovative solutions for more effective, equitable, inclusive and sustainable management of cultural and environmental heritage.
Taormina: a symbolic place to discuss resilience
The choice of Taormina is not accidental. Overlooking the Ionian coast and dominated by Mount Etna, the city provides an emblematic setting for reflecting on the ability of cultural and environmental heritage to adapt to natural and climate-related phenomena that have affected the area throughout the centuries.
The event will take place in the evocative setting of Taormina's historic centre and will be accessible both in person and online, enabling an international community of researchers, professionals, institutions and stakeholders to participate.
The first day will be held in Italian, with English interpretation provided on site, while the international seminar on 2 October will be held in English, with Italian interpretation.
