The new European Thematic Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystems of the European Environment Agency is born

Today the European Environment Agency (EEA)has informed of the birth of the new European Thematic Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystems, the ETC / BE, which will start its activities in 2023 for a first cycle that will last until 2026. and of which ISPRA is a member.

The new Thematic Center will have the task of supporting the European Environment Agency in three main areas:

  1. Support for the implementation of EU directives, strategies and policies in the environmental field relating to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems, including their integration with transversal sectoral issues such as climate change, sustainable and circular economy and integration with aspects relating to policies global (CBD, SDGs, UNCLOS) and regional (OSPAR Convention, Helcom, Barcelona).
  2. Development and support to the monitoring foreseen for the implementation of the eighth European Environmental Program, the European Green Deal, including the mid-term evaluation of the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Zero Pollution Action Plan and the various sectoral policies .
  3. Contribution to the development of the contents of the EEA State and Outlook of - Europe's Environment 2025 Report, which will be prepared in 2022 and 2023 and which will require the preparation of integrated environmental assessments of the various ecosystems (terrestrial, inland waters, marine waters).

The participation of ISPRA in the ETC / BE consortium is fully in line with its institutional mandate regarding the analysis of data relating to the implementation of environmental policies with particular regard to those of the state of marine biodiversity. ISPRA, in the ETC / BE consortium, will carry out the analyzes on a European scale of the implementation of European environmental policies, the assessment of the conservation status / GES of marine biodiversity, the implementation of the ecological network of marine protected areas, and the assessment of the achievement of environmental targets set by the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030.
