Project ERA-PLANET “SMURBS - Smart Urban Solutions for air quality disaster and city growth"

ISPRA-SNPA and 19 European partners promote "smart" tools and technologies for cities based on Earth Observation with the SMURBS project. SMURBS aspires to make cities sustainable with respect to environmental challenges such as air quality and health, natural and anthropogenic disasters, urban expansion and migration. ISPRA-SNPA, and in particular the department for the Geological Service, GEO-DES area together with the ARPAs of the regions of Puglia, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, will develop indicators for land consumption and methodologies for monitoring the urban expansion using satellite data from the Copernicus program. The results will be tested in the five pilot cities Monopoli, Naples, Bologna, Venice and Trieste.

SMURBS is funded by the European research and innovation program H2020, as the winning project of the international call for tenders for the framework project "The European network for observing our changing planet - ERA-PLANET", component 1 "Smart City and Resilient Society" . The project started in September 2017 and will last 36 months.
