From then, intense and recurrent blooms of this seaweed alga occurred in several locations of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Adriatic Sea. The presence of the microalgae O. ovata was detected in all the Italian coastal regions but Emilia-Romagna, Molise and Veneto.
