The State of the Environment in Italy 2025: Indicators and Analysis
The report The State of the Environment in Italy 2025: Indicators and Analysis, produced by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), provides an updated and integrated overview of the main environmental dynamics in the country.
The analysis is based on a selection of indicators drawn from the ISPRA Environmental Indicators Database (https://indicatoriambientali.isprambiente.it/it).
The document is characterised by an innovative approach that goes beyond the traditional division into thematic sectors, organising the indicators into five main macro-areas: climate change, circular economy, towards zero pollution, biodiversity and natural capital, and sustainable tourism.
The first four areas were identified in line with the priorities of the European Green Deal and the Eighth Environment Action Programme (8th EAP) of the European Union, while sustainable tourism was addressed for its cross-cutting nature and its role in integrating the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability.
This framework enables a more interconnected representation of environmental conditions, combining sectoral insights with a systemic and coherent vision consistent with the strategic objectives of European environmental policies.
The report provides citizens, experts, observers and policy-makers with a clear and accessible tool to understand the state of the environment in Italy and to guide future decision-making.
This is made possible thanks to the indicators developed by ISPRA, which constitute a shared knowledge base and a scientific reference for analyses conducted at the European, national and regional levels.
