The project beneficiary chose Italy, with ISPRA as the host institution, in recognition of the country’s extensive experience in communicating climate-related challenges, particularly in the context of extreme weather events, adaptation and environmental education. For Estonia, raising public awareness and increasing citizen engagement are crucial to the success of government measures aimed at the green transition and climate change adaptation. The targets set are ambitious and require public awareness and strong public support.
Together with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), ISPRA organised a tailored programme involving experts in climate change adaptation, communication and community engagement processes.
Building on an overview of the respective countries’ adaptation policy frameworks, the programme introduced Italy’s 2023 National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, the CLIMADAT platform, including from a user experience perspective, and national case studies on communication strategies for the green transition.
Among the successful communication campaigns presented was “Facciamo Circolare”, developed by ISPRA and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. The campaign was also presented to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) and to the Green Spider Network, which promotes communication on European environmental policies.
With regard to awareness-raising activities designed to encourage young people and communities to take action on climate change and the green transition, MASE presented the engagement process underpinning the National Strategy for Sustainable Development, together with the new pilot initiative “Raccogliamo le idee” (“Let’s Gather Ideas”).
CMCC presented the results of the first Climate Change Adaptation Festival, organised as part of the DesirMED project. On the subject of disinformation, ISPRA discussed the scientific information shared through its official social media channels and initiatives to counter fake news, including activities involving young people through school-to-work training programmes. These programmes also featured a successful case study on youth participation in the UNEP/MAP COP 23, organised by INFO-RAC.
The exchange week also included a field visit organised by MASE, with the support of the RomaNatura Regional Authority, to the Secche di Tor Paterno Marine Protected Area. The Estonian delegation took part in an immersive experience highlighting the area’s ecological significance and the distinctive features of its management. The delegation also had the opportunity to observe educational and youth engagement activities focusing on climate change adaptation.
