Methane in the Italian greenhouse gas Inventory L’Italia e il Global Methane Pledge

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, second only to carbon dioxide in terms of its contribution to global warming. Methane has a Global Warming Potential 85 times that of CO2 over a period of 20 years, although CO2 has an atmospheric lifetime of thousands of years, while methane disappears in about 10-15 years. The rapid decay of methane and its high impact on atmospheric temperature make it a primary objective to curb in a timely and effective manner the climate change.

In this context, the focus on methane emissions and reduction commitments such as the Global Methane Pledge with a political commitment to reduce global methane emissions in all sectors by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. The Commitment has been signed at the 19 September 2022 by 122 countries.

The report analyses national methane emissions from the main emission sources and potential emission reductions by 2030 for each source has been elaborated. Moreover, a brief international overview of methane emissions and a comparison between the promoters of the Global Methane Pledge - the United States and the European Union - has been carried out.
