JoNeF is a European network launched in 2023 that brings together experts, institutions and environmental authorities with the aim of promoting the conservation of macrofungi (macromycetes) and their recognition within European biodiversity policies. Through collaboration between the scientific community and institutions, JoNeF works to develop concrete tools to support fungal conservation.
Main activities of the first cycle (2023–2024):
- Establishment of the JoNeF team, involving experts and environmental authorities.
- Survey on national legislation and environmental policies in 32 European countries.
- Publication of the JoNeF Survey Report.
- Drafting of a guidance document (JoNeF Guidance) with recommendations for the integration of macrofungi into environmental policies.
Objectives for the second cycle (2025–2027):
- Strengthen cooperation between the scientific community and environmental authorities.
- Promote the inclusion of macrofungi in European environmental policies.
- Define harmonised standards for fungal data collection across Europe.
- Integrate fungal data into major international databases and develop a reference framework for the use of mycoindicators in environmental assessments.
Expected outcomes:
- A shared European process for collecting data on macrofungi.
- Definition of mycoindicators to assess habitat quality, including Natura 2000 sites.
- Launch of a dedicated JoNeF website.
Main deliverables:
- 2025: Report on fungal information systems in Europe and worldwide.
- 2026: Report on mycoindicators applicable to environmental assessments.
- 2027: Report on a harmonised data collection system and launch of the JoNeF website.
JoNeF is coordinated by ISPRA and implemented within the IMPEL network (European Union Network for the Implementation and Enforcement of Environmental Law).
