Assessment of the potential risk of plant protection products in Natura 2000 areas

More than 2,500 Italian sites of the Natura 2000 network, which currently cover 21% of the national territory, have been set up to create a network of natural areas with the aim of protecting species and natural habitats of Community interest.

European Directives "Habitat" and "Birds" require that, within these sites, economic activities with the aim of biodiversity conservation should be maintained and encouraged, and should also be carried out with methods consistent with the protection of biodiversity.

Among the economic activities, agriculture can be integrated more closely with the measures for the conservation of species and habitats of European interest. Therefore, it is important to define appropriate measures that indicate the ways in which these agricultural activities should be carried out.

Within these activities, the use of plant protection products could threaten the conservation of species and habitats in Natura 2000 sites. This report describes different methods for assessing the potential danger arising from the use of plant protection products
