The Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) was adopted in September 2023 during the fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5), held in Bonn, Germany. This global framework provides the foundations for a future in which humanity can benefit from chemicals in a safe and sustainable manner, guiding countries and stakeholders through five strategic objectives and 28 targets. Its primary purpose is to address the entire life cycle of chemicals and waste, preventing harmful impacts on human health and the environment.
The Conference represents a critical milestone in translating commitments into concrete action and will be structured around three key themes: monitoring progress through the adoption of indicators; accelerating action to identify practical solutions in high-impact sectors; and investing to unlock funding and foster innovation. The programme will include high-level dialogues, thematic forums and events focusing on solutions and cross-sectoral partnerships.
In preparation for the Conference, the GFC and the Geneva Environment Network have promoted the series of meetings entitled "Road to the First International Conference", an initiative designed to provide Member States and stakeholders with an opportunity to share their perspectives and expectations on key issues. Reports on the preparatory events are available online, enabling interested parties to stay informed about progress, while a live stream of the plenary sessions has been made available to follow the Conference.

ISPRA is represented at the session by Simone Marzeddu, a member of the Hazardous Substances Section (DG-TEC), who has been appointed as a member of the Italian delegation, together with representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS).
