Il Gargano, un archivio della diversità geologica dal Mesozoico al Pleistocene

Giornate di Paleontologia, IX Edizione - Apricena 2009

In 2009 the “Giornate di Paleontologia”, the annual Meeting of the Società Paleontologica Italiana, was held at San Marco in Lamis and Apricena (Foggia, Southern Italy) from 28th to 31st of May. Here we present the Field Trip Guide prepared for the “Giornate di Paleontologia 2009”, with few updating. The Field Trip show some of the countless stratigraphical and palaeontological issues of the Gargano area, known as one of the Italian area with the richest, best documented and well studied record of the geological evolution from Mesozoic to Quaternary in the Mediterranean area. The first excursion day is dedicated to the Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian) and Eocene stratigraphical and paleontological elements outcropping in the southern Gargano promontory, South to the Mattinata fault. The second day is devoted to the Pliocene-Pleistocene successions outcropping in the Poggio Imperiale-Apricena Quarry District, in the northwestern sector of the Gargano Promontory, and to the very rich fossil vertebrate associations found in these sediments.
