GEOcore -Geospatial Earth Observation core platform

GEOcore is a project dedicated to developing an integrated digital platform to facilitate access to and the operational use of Earth Observation (EO) and geospatial data by public administrations and infrastructure operators. Co-funded by the Lazio ERDF Programme 2021–2027 and the European Union, under the Lazio STEP Call for Proposals, “Support for the Development and Manufacturing of Critical Technologies”, managed by Lazio Innova, the project involves GMATICS and ISPRA.

Through an interoperable solution, GEOcore aims to overcome the fragmentation of information sources, software tools and expertise by automating data acquisition, processing and visualisation workflows, and facilitating the use of data in decision-making processes and territorial monitoring activities.

The project focuses on three application areas:

  • Urban air quality, to monitor environmental conditions;

  • Land take and nature restoration, to support the monitoring of land-use changes;

  • Tree vegetation interference with electricity networks, to help assess infrastructure risks.

ISPRA is directly involved in activities relating to urban air quality monitoring and land take and nature restoration.

The platform is designed to be potentially extended to additional areas of territorial monitoring.

The collaboration between GMATICS and ISPRA, further strengthened through IRIDELab, combines technological and technical-scientific expertise with an understanding of public administrations’ needs, laying the foundations for the joint development of the GEOcore platform and its related geospatial services.

The project began on 24 April 2026 and will run for two years.
