Regional registers of sites interested by a contamination management procedure

The register of sites to be remediated is required by Contaminated Sites Regulation (article no. 251 of Legislative Decree no. 152/06 and its amendments). The register should contain the list of sites subject to remediation and environmental restoration as well as the list of remedial activities carried out in these sites, the identification of the persons in charge of cleaning up, public bodies designated by the Region for public intervention in the event of non-compliance of the obligated parties.
The contents and the structure of the basic data of the Register were defined by ISPRA in collaboration with the Regions and the Regional Agencies for Environmental Protection (ARPA). The first version of these criteria was published in 2001.
A survey carried out by Minister of the Environment, Land and Sea (now Ministry of Environment and Energy Security -  MASE) in 2015 showed that the progress of the regional registers is strongly uneven and so is the structure and data content of each register.
In 2016, a representative network was set up within the SNPA (National System for Environmental Protection) with the aim of defining a nationally shared structure for the data on contaminated sites. Once a shared structure has been defined, the database will be implemented in the national information system.

In 2020, MOSAICO, the national database for contaminated sites, was created.

In 2021, the database population was started.

In 2023, a public online consultation section of the MOSAICO data was made available on the dedicated website
