Environmental controls are a key element for the National System for Environmental Protection and for the country. Today they employ a quarter of the staff of the Agencies: 2600 technicians work in surveillance and inspection activities, half with functions of Judicial Police officer. The experts of ISPRA and the Arpa-Appa Agencies carry out checks, monitoring and inspections on approximately 6400 industrial installations subject to Integrated Environmental Authorization (AIA) and on 500 so-called “Seveso” plants.
