The next 15 December ISPRA organizes the event "The biodiversity in extreme and remote marine environment and in Sicily". The initiatives is an opportunity to present the activities carried out in the whole of the Regional Observatory Biodiversity of the Sicilian Region (ORBS)of Sicilian Region. During the event will be presented the video doc "Sottoilmare - biodiversity in extreme and remote environments in Sicily” concerning the activities developed by ISPRA, which have contributed to the objective to implement the database of the Observatory,

In particular the images come from the second ISPRA campaign for monitoring the banks of the Strait of Sicily (known as the Sicily Channel),

In this campaign, conducted on oceanographic ship Astrea of ISPRA,the research used tools and methodologies that allowed investigations in remote non-destructive, such  as the ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), a guided camera,  which can reach up to 500 meters deep, and the MultiBeam, which allows to make detailed bathymetric charts of the seabed in 3D.

The Project ORBS, which includes such activities, is an extensive research that comes from a framework program agreement signed in 2011 between the Department of Environment of the Sicilian Region, ISPRA, CNR and ARPA Sicily.
