Litter waste, especially plastics, heavily affects the marine environment and the protection of biodiversity, above all in the delicate Mediterranean basin. In order to define effective conservation measures, reliable scientific data is needed to analyze the risk and highlight relation between pollution pressure and the primary biological needs of marine species.

The MEDSEALITTER, co-project, co-financed by the Interreg MED Program, has developed innovative methodologies to monitor the impact of waste on ecosystems and biodiversity, with particular attention to marine protected areas.

The partnership of the project, of which the Cinque Terre National Park is the leader, brings together, in addition to Ispra, Environmental Agencies, Academic and Scientific Research Institutes, Marine Protected Areas and Environmental Associations. The project includes training workshops to promote the monitoring protocols adressed to the Parks and Marine Protected Areas throughout the Mediterranean to share with them the know-how developed in the project and also that the protocol adheres as much as possible to the needs and competences of the Protected Areas.

At the meeting will participate an Ispra expert.
