IPBES was established to improve communication between science and policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The actions and reports published by the IPBES are the result of cooperation between th research world, the bodies responsible for monitoring and controlling the state and decision-makers.
On 27 January 2020, the Italian government formally joined the IPBES and, on the recommendation of the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea designated three ISPRA experts as National Focal Points (NFP).

With the notification of EM/2021/06  IPBES has organized a virtual conference to offer governments and all stakeholders the opportunity to provide indications and observations to the investigation process of the IPBES document entitled Methodological assessment of business and biodiversity.
The goal of the document is the definition of a method to evaluate and classify the way in which companies depend on biodiversity and impact on it and the contributions of nature to people.
