Since 2005, Italy has hosted the INFO/RAC Information and Communication Center of the United Nations Environment Programme's Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP).
The mission is to guarantee adequate information and communication services and the infrastructural technologies necessary to the contracting parties, in order to improve the management of environmental information and the communication and knowledge dissemination capabilities of the MAP.

"It is by now evident, both on a national and international level, how urgent and fundamental it is to protect and preserve the Mediterranean Sea and its Coasts. Precisely with this objective in mind, the Ministry of the Environment and ISPRA presented - as part of the projects related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan - the Marine Ecosystem Restoration. This is a 400 million euros project, of which ISPRA is the implementing body, aimed at strengthening the national systems to  observe marine ecosystems, expand the knowledge on marine habitats of conservation interest and design and implement restoration actions. This project aims to map by 2026 90% of the marine habitats under conservation interest and to strengthen the national marine research and monitoring system in Italy" declared the ISPRA DG Maria Siclari.
