Italy is the European country wich has the greater number of kilometers of coasts risking erosion: on 7.500 Kms, 2.400 Kms are affected by it. Around one third of the Italian coasts, therefore, risks to disappear because of the erosion.
The project CADSEALAND, approved in the February 2004 within the program Interreg III B CADSES, faces the problems connected to the phenomenon of the coastal erosion and the complex interactions among the coastal environment and the river basins.

Within the project, APAT has those tasks:

  • Developing international standards for the definition of a "state of the coast" useful for the territorial planning and management.
  • Developing efficient monitoring systems for the state of the coast and its evolution, efficient techniques for the protection of endangered coastal areas and reconstruction of damaged ones.
  • Developing and diffusing an integrated culture of land-sea interaction in coastal areas for their preservation and management as well as for planning of future development of CADSES area, together with guidelines to be adopted by public institutions for protection of the coast.
