The new ISO 14001:2015 is due to be published very soon and this will bring significant changes for environmental management systems. In the meantime, the most advanced pilot studies on the European Commission Environmental Footprints, as defined by Recommendation 2013/179/CE, are approaching their final goal, while others are still in full swing. These are all raising expectations on the future of environmental footprinting, in Europe and Italy. The Program for environmental footprint evaluation of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, after an unavoidable stop, is also being relaunched. Finally, according to the last European studies on EMAS and the EU Ecolabel, the most recent developments of these EU schemes for voluntary certification offer useful insights on how they can become effective management and marketing instruments, as well as on their possible future developments. All these considerations together allow the anticipation of a scenario full of important changes and, as a result, full of challenges and opportunities for environmental management. The conference, organized as part of the activities of GEO–the Green Economy Observatory, IEFE Bocconi, aims to provide the most updated framework and main guidelines on emerging innovations.
