For decades, urban planning has viewed land merely as a space — a neutral, inexpensive, two-dimensional surface on which to build. Today, there is a need to move beyond this traditional view of land through the new urbanisme de sol paradigm, recognising soil as a complex, fragile biological ecosystem that is non-renewable on a human timescale.

The roundtable held on 9 October explored strategic approaches to translating technical evidence into political commitments and practical recommendations for local authorities. The discussion brought together various French ministries and institutions with expertise in soil-related matters. It also provided an opportunity to foster cross-border dialogue with Italy, thanks to the contribution of Francesca Assennato from ISPRA, who presented the Italian perspective on soil management, progress in soil monitoring, and the implementation of the Directive in Italy.

The event follows a recent event co-organised by ISPRA on these topics on 21 September, in collaboration with Unitelma, FNAU, CNR and SGI. That event initiated a discussion on the Directive, sustainable soil management, and the need for a new approach to spatial planning.
