At UNEA-7, ISPRA co-organized the event ‘Advancing the Global Environmental Data Strategy

On the sidelines of the seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), which concluded on 12 December in Nairobi, ISPRA and INFO-RAC, in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Nairobi and with the political support of MASE, co-organized a high-level event on the implementation of the Global Environmental Data Strategy (GEDS) developed by UNEP. The informal event, co-organized with the governments of Estonia, Kenya and UNEP, brought together government representatives and key partners from the private sector and academia to discuss how to advance the global implementation of the GEDS.

With the strategy defined, this working session shifted attention to operational aspects—specifically, how to translate the seven GEDS intervention areas into concrete actions through partnerships, pilot projects, and investments. It served as a strategic platform to reaffirm political support, align priorities, and activate partnerships by connecting the themes of environmental data, digital transformation, and responsible AI governance.

For the introduction to the in-depth panels, the reflections of the attending Ambassadors were crucial: the Ambassador of Estonia to Kenya, the Ambassador of Kenya, and the Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, who, speaking about capacity-building and knowledge transfer to improve data management, drew on the Italian experience, citing INFO-RAC as a best practice of regional governance and highlighting how the cooperation model established with Kenya is based on knowledge sharing and deep mutual trust.

Two further discussion panels, coordinated by ESA and the Global Alliance for Citizen Science, featured contributions—including interventions from the audience—from representatives of the European Space Agency and UNEP. The interactive discussions helped identify the areas in which Member States and partners can play a leading and collaborative role to achieve results in terms of: national data strategies; data quality and provenance; interoperability standards; federated platforms; access to priority datasets; affordability and inclusion; and capacity-building.
